How to tell if you have damaged hair? Take the test.

Healthy Hair Test:
- Run your fingers through your hair. Do you feel roughness or unevenness?
- Check your hair strands. Are any of them bent?
- Slightly pull on your hair. Does it feel elastic like a hair band? Does is break?

If you answered yes to any of the above, your hair is screaming for attention.

When you feel roughness or unevenness through your hair, it means that your cuticles are coming out on the surface. Bent strands mean you don't have enough moisture in your hair. And if your strands are breaking or too elastic, that means your hair's becoming weaker.

What causes hair damage?

- Perm, color and even sweat
- UV rays
- Hair straighteners, curling irons and blow-dryers
- Too much friction caused by shampooing and brushing your hair

All of these factors make your hair cuticles to fall out, causing all the nutritious substance to fall out as well.

How to treat your damaged hair

The first step in treatment starts from reconditioning the inside of your hair.
Use hair treatment to replenish the lost nutrition. Bring your hair pH level back to normal by using amino acid shampoos. Also, make sure you use a towel to absorb most of the moisture from your hair before using a hair dryer and apply a leave-in treatment to protect your hair from blow-drying heat.

There you have it! You're on your way to shiny healthy hair!

3 things you probably didn't know about Texas

Hi everyone! Since our Plano Salon is getting settled in a new environment, we thought we’d share with you what we learned about Texas.

1. The origin of Texas
Did you know that the name “Texas” comes from the Indian language “Tejas” which means “friendship” and “allies”?

Way back in history, Texas was a province of Mexico, but from 1835 to 1836, Texas won its independence. Their victory called for a new flag which featured a white lone star and hence their nickname, “The Lone Star State” — a representation of pride and independence.

Staying true to its origins, the people in Texas are extremely friendly and we all take pride in the amazing state we live in.

2. It’s bigger than you think it is
Texas is the 2nd largest state in the U.S. both by area and population. So, everything is really spacious out here. Many people drive big pickup trucks and roads and parking spaces are nice and wide—Yes!! So much room to breathe.

3. The center of rapid growth
After the Civil War, livestock, especially cattle thrived and became the center of the industry. In the early 20th century Texas experienced an economic boom with the oil industry, which later developed into a diversified economy bringing in high-tech companies as well as other new businesses. Texas is now the 2nd highest in gross state product and continues to experience rapid growth.

So, there’s a glimpse of Texas! Viange Hair is proud to be in the middle of an amazing, innovative state. And don’t forget to visit us at our new salon in Plano, Texas!

Are you feeding your hair right? Best and Worst foods for healthy hair.

Healthy hair stems from a healthy scalp. One way to tell if you have healthy scalp is from the color of it. Check your scalp right now to see where you stand.

Pale: Congratulations. You have a healthy scalp!
Yellowish: Caution needed. Your scalp is signaling for attention.
Reddish: Danger zone. Your scalp is irritated and needs your utmost attention.

When your scalp is in a sensitive state, not only do you need to care for it from the outside, but you also need to nourish it from the inside. Your whole body is made of what you eat and your scalp is no exception.

For those of you in the caution to danger zone, as well as those who want to maintain your healthy scalp, here's what you should be eating:

Leafy Greens: Leafy greens like spinach are a good source of vitamin A and C as well as iron, beta-carotene and folate. These amazing nutrients keep your scalp moisturized and promote hair growth.

Liver: Liver is concentrated with vitamin A and B3, which enhances circulation in your scalp.

Fruits: Guava has more than 4 times the minimum daily recommended amount of vitamin C which protects your hair from breaking.

Fish: Salmon, sardines and mackerel are all packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which your body can't produce on its own. Omega-3 fatty acids help prevent hair loss and keep your scalp hydrated.

All of these foods improve your metabolism to produce healthy sebum for your hair.

On the other hand, what should you avoid?

Greasy Food:
Need we say more? Greasy food makes greasy skin. That's including your scalp. The oil causes clogged pores, which is the fundamental problem for hair loss.

Alcohol:
Alcohol slows the levels of zinc in your body – a necessary mineral for healthy hair and growth. It also dehydrates your scalp, making your hair more brittle.

Caffeine and spices:
Try to avoid stimulating food like caffeine and spices. They may cause irritation to your scalp.

Use this simple guideline and start paying attention to what you eat. Beautiful hair can be controlled from the inside out.

3 simple secrets to hydrated hair.

Did you know that 12%-14% of your hair is supposed to be made up of water? When this moisture level is maintained, your hair is at it's best with the shine and smoothness of every woman's dreams. On the flip side, your hair gets coarse and rugged when that moisture level goes down to 6%-8%. It may seem like a small difference in the numbers, but you won't believe the amount of impact it has on your hair.

So how the heck do you maintain that ideal moisture level? Start with these 3 pointers.

1. Wash it right
We've done a whole entire blog post on this in the past, but it's so important we're going to say it again. Yes, there's a correct way of washing your hair. It's important for you to focus on washing your scalp instead of your hair strands because the scalp is the root of all of your hair problems. When you let dirt build up in your scalp, it not only welcomes bacteria, but it causes inflammation and dehydration to your entire hair.

If you're the type of person who rubs and scrubs your hair strands, you're creating too much friction for your hair causing even more dehydration. For step-by-step details on the correct way to wash your hair, read our past blog post: The #1 most important step in hair care most women ignore.

Recommended shampoo for hydration: RENE FURTERER CARTHAME

2. Treat it right
There's also a correct way of applying hair treatment. Once you've washed your hair with shampoo, make sure you dry it with a towel before applying your treatment. It's harder for the treatment to actually get deep down into the core of your hair when your hair is still soaking wet. Once you've applied your treatment, don't rinse it off right away. You need to give it time (Read specific instructions on product packaging) for all the nutrients to sink in for perfect hydration. After you've waited, make sure you rinse off every bit of the treatment. Some people only mildly rinse thinking it's better to leave some treatment in your hair, but in fact, once the nutrients have sunk in, there's no need to leave it in. Rinse thoroughly to prevent unnecessary build up in your hair.

3. Dry it right
What does drying have to do with moisture? Isn't it the complete opposite of hydration? Some people leave their hair wet and let it air dry because it seems like the most natural option. But in fact, leaving your hair wet for a considerable amount of time leaves your hair cuticles open, which causes dehydration. Heat will actually help close those cuticles, closing in all the nutrients and moisture you applied from your treatment.

You guessed it. There's a proper way of drying your hair as well.
1) Once you've come out of the shower, press your hair with a towel and gently remove excess water. Blow-drying completely soaked hair is quite damaging.

2) When your hair is blow-dryer ready, make sure you hold it at least 8" away from your hair. Set it on high heat and start drying your hair from the roots. Concentrate on your roots and try not to apply your dryer directly to your ends. A lot of times, the heat coming in from your roots is enough to dry the ends. Don't use combs or brushes yet because they can cause damage when used on wet hair. Just use your hands to comb through.

3) Once your roots are completely dry, you can switch to low heat or cold air for the rest of your hair. Too much heat on your hair will damage it. The change in temperature from hot to cold will actually tighten up your hair cuticles, giving your hair a healthy shine.

So now you know the secret to maintaining moisturized hair! Master these 3 steps for perfect hydration and get glowing hair all the ladies will be jealous of.
