Want healthy hair? This is the one place you should be treating.

Hair loss, dryness, dullness? You name it. Almost any kind of hair problem stems from an unhealthy scalp. What's your solution? —A scalp treatment.

Globally renowned for over 60 years, Rene Furterer is a natural hair care brand we use in all of our salons. As the founder of the brand coined it, "Beautiful hair grows from a healthy scalp like a plant in fertile soil." Rene Furterer uses carefully selected essential oils to bring out the innate healing power of natural plants.

So, what exactly is scalp treatment? A scalp treatment purifies and unclogs your hair follicles. With proper massaging, it also promotes blood circulation so essential nutrients can better reach deep down into your roots for long-lasting healthy hair. Plus, here's another reason you should get a scalp treatment—it's super relaxing.

We recommend a scalp treatment at our salon at least once a month, but for those who prefer to do it themselves at home, it's certainly possible. Try Rene Furterer's COMPLEXE 5, a product used to massage your scalp before shampooing. It purifies your scalp and increases microcirculation for a healthy scalp and beautiful hair.

5 simple tips for a healthy scalp

Ever feel tightness around your head? It's definitely not a headache, but it's definitely uncomfortable. That feeling is most likely coming from an unhealthy scalp—and you need to take action.

What's causing the tightness?
1. Poor blood circulation
Blood circulation plays an important role in bringing a nice flow of nutrients to your scalp. As circulation slows down, so does the amount of nutrients going to your scalp, eventually weakening the muscles around your head.

2. Dryness
When moisture level goes down, your scalp starts to dry up causing stiffness and sometimes flakiness. Although there are many factors that may cause dryness, washing your hair with an overpowering shampoo can definitely strip away the essential oils in your scalp.

3. UV Rays
There are several types of UV rays, but the most damaging ones are the UV-As which penetrate deep into your scalp. This causes tightness in your scalp because it destroys the collagen and elastin that normally supports elasticity in your skin.

What can you do to loosen up your scalp?
1. Add scalp massages to your regular hair regimen to enhance blood circulation.

2. Consume foods and supplements that stimulate blood circulation:
-Vitamin A (carrots, spinach, etc.)
-Vitamin B6 (tuna, parsley, bananas etc.)
-Glycogen (via supplements)

3. Keep alcohol to a minimum. It takes a lot of energy for your liver to break down alcohol and all the vitamin A and B6 you've consumed to promote your blood circulation will be wasted on it.

4. Stretch and engage in moderate exercise. Bad posture also slows down your blood circulation, so make sure you maintain a good posture.

5. Use amino acid shampoo for hydrating and nourishing your dry scalp.

You may have never paid attention, but healthy scalp is vital to healthy, beautiful hair. Start caring for your scalp and you'll start to notice the difference. Let our expert hairstylists know if you've got any questions!

Hair rescue: Your 4-step post-beach treatment

Going for a dip in the ocean or the pool this summer? Make sure you've got a game plan for preserving your beautiful hair.

Not many people realize it but the ocean/pool water can be quite damaging to your hair. Simply put, it has a high salt content. What's the problem with that? Salt dries you up. When your hair is exposed to such a high level of salt content, your body tries to get rid of the extra salt by releasing moisture from your hair. As a result of dehydration, you can get coarse and brittle hair, scalp irritation, discoloration and more hair tragedies you won't be happy dealing with.

So, what can you do to save your hair? 4-step post-beach treatment:

1. Rinse it all out
There’s no time to waste. It’s important that you remove all the salt and dirt out of your hair as soon as possible. Make sure you take at least a minute to carefully rinse out everything with water. Just using a towel to wipe your hair or air-drying is a big no-no.

2. Cleanse your scalp
After you've rinsed, focus on cleansing your scalp instead of your hair strands. When you let dirt build up in your scalp, it not only welcomes bacteria, but it causes inflammation and dehydration to your entire hair. Use the balls of your fingers to gently massage your scalp for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. You don't want to overdo it since your scalp is extremely sensitive after being exposed to sunlight and sea salt.

For step-by-step details on the correct way to wash your hair, read our past blog post: The #1 most important step in hair care most women ignore.

3. Double the treatment
As the name implies, you're going to apply treatment twice. After cleansing your scalp apply hair treatment to your strands and then wash it out. Once you've dried your hair with a towel, apply a leave-in treatment. Double treatment helps preserve the nutrients in your hair and is more effective in repairing the damage in your hair.

4. Dry Thoroughly
Once you're out of the shower, take a hair towel separate from the towel you use to dry your body, and gently pat your hair. Then, use your blow-dryer to thoroughly dry your hair. Air-drying your hair or leaving your hair wet for a considerable amount of time leaves your hair cuticles open, which causes dehydration. Heat will actually help close those cuticles, closing in all the nutrients and moisture you applied from your treatment.

Follow these 4 simple steps and you're all set to enjoy your beach days without having to sacrifice beautiful hair. Want to know more about shampoos and treatment products for the summer? Ask our expert hairstylists for recommendations!
